  1. Hey Anthony, your site is extremely helpful. I am an international medical graduate and was accepted for fellowship in Australia. I would just like to confirm that AHPRA does indeed accept an aggregate of scores across two sittings? I ask because I have the following scores:

    Sitting one
    Listening 8.0
    Reading 7.0
    Writing 6.5
    Speaking 8.0
    Overall 7.5

    Sitting two
    Listening 8.5
    Reading 6.5
    Writing 7.0
    Speaking 8.0
    Overall 7.5

Although I have a 6.5 in each test (first in writing, then in reading), did I understand it correctly that I was still able to satisfy the following:
    1. minimum overall score of 7 in each sitting
    2. minimum score of 7 in each component ACROSS two sittings
    3. no score in any component below 6.5

Thus, I can be eligible to apply for registration in AHPRA.

thanks and more power to this site!

    1. hi Kevin
Yes. You would be able to combine those scores together so long as they are not more than 6 months apart.

  2. Hi good day, I am accepted as a doctor in training program at Monash Health I did OET I got B in writing, listening and speaking I got 330 in reading which is C+ Do u accept such results or I should repeat the exam in all components or one component? “

    1. Hi Hasina
Its not my job to “accept such results” I’m not the adjudicator. The Medical Board is very clear that you must achieve all the minimum requirements which you can do in either one sitting or in certain cases combine 2 assessments.
I am not sure how you can be accepted to work in a training program without the satisfactory score.

  3. Hi. I have done my AMC MCQ exam but in OET i dropped in listening and reading from 290 as APHRA needs minimum of 350 in each subtests. So now do i need to repeat all the subtests or just listening and reading?

    1. Hello
You need to read the AHPRA guidelines carefully. You can sometimes count the scores across 2 separate tests to prove your English competency. That being said employers are likely to be concerned if you need 2 tests to prove your competency. I’d recommend doing some further study and then trying to improve your score on one test.

  4. Hi,

I’ve studied my secondary and tertiary studies in Canada. (Total of 5 school years). I have also studied about 2 years in the US when I was younger. Now, the primary pathway for English profiency requires 6 years of primary and secondary schooling in a recognized country. I find it difficult to comprehend why I need to take an IELTS because as an Asian, I’ve been put back to many English as a second language plus regular English classes in high school. And it is also a prerequisite to have English in order to graduate college. I wonder if AHPRA will consider my education in Canada. I did take IELTS just in case AHPRA asks for this and scored 7.5 overall with writing as a 6.5.

    1. Hi Ralph
Yes. It does sound frustrating. But those are the rules and AHPRA does not make exceptions. Unfortunately. You will need to sit your IELTS a second time because the 6.5 in writing will not be acceptable.

  5. HI, MY WIFE HAS STUDIED ALL HER EUDCATION YEARS IN ENGLISH AND NOW HAVE DONE AMC MCQ EXAM (WHICH IS ALREADY PASSES). FURTHER TO CONTINUE IN AUSTRALIA DOES SHE REQUIRED TO GIVE ENGLISH TEST TO START A JOB THERE OR FIRST SHE SHOULD PASS CLINICAL EXAM THEN ONLY SHE CAN GET JOB? ALTHOUGH SHE HAS PASSED THE EXAM IN ENGLISH, STILL REQUIRED ENGLISH TESTING? TIA

    1. Hello Syed, its difficult to know with that information. Its quite likely your wife will need to sit an English test. I’d recommend she book a call with me if she would like to go over things in more detail.

    1. Presuming you mean the OET. Doing a bit more is preferred, especially in an area like psychiatry where high-quality English skills are important.

    1. There are some exceptions but generally, if you don’t come from one of a few select countries or have done your training in one of these countries, then you need to sit a test.

You can review the requirement here.

  6. Big challenge for overseas doctors who want to work in Australia. Self-study helps to some extent but joining a structured PTE coaching program can help.
