With AdvanceMed I managed to secure my first preference for Advanced Training.  I was able to work on the confidence of my interview approach and believe I delivered a much better package thanks to the training!

Unpack the Mysteries of the Medical Job Interview Process

What are Essential and Desirable Criteria? And How Do You Provide Examples to Address Them?

I sought out coaching from Advance Med to assist in my interview preparation. Discussing interview questions with Anthony helped me improve my responses and optimise my overall performance. I look forward to utilising the coaching service in the future with the success this brought.

Deliberative Practice

High performing sportspeople and musicians know the value of practicing the hard parts of any task.  We focus on key aspects of the interview process which once mastered will generalise to an improved performance throughout.

Immediacy of Feeback

Your first session begins with practising questions that you are likely to get at the start of your interview.  Feedback is provided along the way.  We then provide you a video recording of your session (normally within an hour of each session) for you to review your performance and the feedback of the coach.

Your Expert

Dr Anthony Llewellyn (B Med Sci, MB BS, FRANZCP, MHA, GAICD, Cert. Coaching ICCP).

Anthony is an expert in Medical HR, a seasoned health public sector executive, medical educationalist and certified coach.

Anthony has reviewed numerous CVs, chaired and conducted over a thousand job interviews and provided advice to a number of employers and Colleges about selection processes. His background: Consultant Psychiatrist and Medical Manager with 20 years’ experience as a medical practitioner in public health services in a range of roles.

From 2012 to 2016, Anthony was the Medical Director of the Health Education & Training Institute (HETI), involved in overseeing a number of network training programs. He is also a Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle’s School of Medicine & Public Health, and Year 5 Psychiatry Coordinator. He is currently completing a PhD in Medical Education, exploring personal learning environments in the intern training space.

Anthony has recently produced a Best Practice Guide to Trainee Selection into Employment Roles for the RACP.

AdvanceMed was crucial in my interview process, and I doubt I would have been successful without him. His service helped on a number of levels. It helped me get over the performance anxiety. Given that first impressions matter so much, coming in with confidence helps a lot. Secondly, Anthony went through a range of questions. This afforded me the luxury of being prepared for the common questions, having a practice run at those I was uncertain answering, and also dealing with curve-ball questions with poise. Anthony's feedback made the actual interview almost effortless.

Why Are Interview Skills Important?

Whilst CVs, prior achievements, referees and other matters are considered as part of the application process.  It often comes down to the interview to decide who gets the job.  Sadly many candidates fail to adequately prepare for this important part of the medical job application process.  A little preparation and practice can dramatically improve your performance.

How does it work?

You will work one on one with our expert Medical HR coaches during a series of 45-minute web-conferencing sessions.  After each session you will be sent a recording of your session for your personal review.*

We recommend 3 sessions.  Additional sessions are available should you wish to purchase them.

You will be able to practice a number of the common question types that occur during an interview and be provided with feedback on your technique, including body language, tone and content.  If you have one or two specific questions you would like to practice we are able to accommodate these as well.

We use Zoom technology to conduct the coaching.  You will need a webcam, microphone and headphones a quiet space and reasonably fast and reliable internet. The system is generally very easy to set up.  If you would like to test Zoom on your system you can do so here.

Why is this better than face to face coaching?

Face to face coaching is great if you can arrange it.  But from our experience online is better for two main reasons:

  1. Firstly, it is generally easier to arrange a convenient time for both the trainee and coach and there is no time wasted in commuting.
  2. Secondly, the videoconferencing technology we use allows us to send you a copy of your session almost straight afterwards so you can immediately review the session, see how you went and practice.  This is much harder to do face to face and would require significant additional cost.
