  1. Hi doctor Anthony.
I am an Indian studying medicine in the Philippines. I will graduate in March 2023. How can I apply for my internship in Australia. Can I take the AMC part 1 after my graduation and move to Australia to work or Do you recommend I do my internship here for a year and then take the AMC?. Is it fine if my internship is done in India and not here . I have heard that if the country of graduation and internship are the same the candidate is more preferred. Can you clarify on these please. Thank you

    1. Hi Sammeta
That’s a lot of questions. Many of which are covered in the post and others on my site.
IMGs rarely are able to get an internship in Australia. I don’t think it matters where you graduate and do your internship for the standard pathway.

  2. Hello
If i complete my residency/post graduate study from Nepal in obs/gynae. Can i directly apply for specialist post after passing AMC exams or do i have to do residency again in Australia in order to work as a specialist doctor?

    1. Hi Sabina
I’d recommend you take my free courses on the Standard Pathway and Specialist Pathway as you have it all wrong.

  3. Hi
I have graduated in russia and don’t have internship is there any chance for me to participate in the amc exam ? And come to Australia to work after passing amc exmas ?

  4. If we have been working after AMC part 1 Does this work count for general registration once we pass Clinical exam..? Like suppose we have worked in ED and medicine before passing clinical is it necessary to repeat the rotation after passing clinical again for getting a general registration..?

    1. You have to successfully complete 12 months of supervised practice to obtain general registration. This can be done after passing AMC 1 and any time before or after passing AMC 2. But you need to complete AMC 1&2 to be able to apply for general registration.

  5. hi Anthony,
thanks for posting such rich feedbacks. I would like to know if public health jobs such as District health managers or as health promoters as require registration with AMC. Do doctors who have a medical degree but wish to apply for non-clinical jobs in public health have to register with AMC ? are there other regulatory bodies for such purposes ?

    1. Hi, there are no regulatory bodies for plain management roles. Most Medical management roles, such as a Director of Medical Services will require you to be registered.

    1. That largely depends on you. As noted in the article its recommended you take some time to prepare for each exam.
In the past, there has been a bit of a wait for the clinical (around 12 months) which you can only apply for after you pass the MCQ.

      1. Hi, today i finished my amc1 exam..but i didt answered all150questions.. time was not sufficient to me.. just 140answers i have and exam ended… can you tell me please peoples talking about that you should to answer all150questions otherwise the exam will not be valid. Is is true??

        1. I understand it will be marked for you but you will be disadvantaged as you did not answer all the questions.

  6. Hello Doctor Anthony! Thanks for this amazing blog. I wanted to know that if I pass AMC Clinical will my chances improve of getting a PGY-2 job ? And how long it usually takes to get it? Thank you again.

    1. Having the AMC 2 usually boosts your chances of being interviewed for a job. Which will obviously improve your overall prospects.

  7. Hi Anthony,

I’m a medical student studying in Japan and will graduate in March 2024.
In Japan, most graduates work as a resident for two years just after graduating from medical school.
I plan to start working in Australia after I finish the two-years-resident.
In that case, is that ok to take AMC MCQ part 1 while I am a student?

  8. Hi Anthony,

I’m an Indian, studying medicine in China and will graduate in July 2023 including completion of my one year internship.
When can I appear for AMC MCQ part 1?
Can I get a job after clearing the part 1 MCQ exam or will I have to wait to clear the second part as well? How difficult is it to get a job after clearing part 1?
Also, I wanted to ask if I can clear PLAB 1 and 2 and do a year of non training job in the NHS, will it be easier to get a training job in Australia?

    1. Hi Sanyukta those first 2 questions are actually answered in this post.
We also have a post comparing the PLAB vs AMC.

  9. Hi Anthony

I’m a bit confused with the internship and the “12 months supervised practice” that is taken after the AMC certification. Is the 12 months the same as the internship you are talking about? If they’re not the same, how are they different? How is a candidate graded in this time period? What will be the working conditions? Can all hospitals in Australia hold this? Will I have a salary or allowance while taking the the 12 months supervised practice?

Is the general registration equivalent to having the medical license to practice in Australia? If not, how are they different?

    1. Hello, the 12 months supervised practice is a period similar to the internship in that it mirrors what interns here are required to do, i.e. satisfactorily complete 48 weeks of work and terms in Medicine, Surgery and Emergency Medicine.
It is not the same as an internship because internships are reserved for local graduates. So you need to apply for resident jobs that can give you a similar experience, i.e. the next job up in the system.
Most public hospitals in Australia employ residents as do a few private hospitals.
You get paid when you do these jobs. It’s Australia.
General Registration is equivalent to having your full medical license in countries that have a licensing system.
It means you can in theory practice independently.

      1. Thank you for answering my queries. You and this article have definitely helped with understanding the process into getting to Australia.
