  1. Hello ,I’m Dr Bharat Sangal from India. I have completed my MBBS and DNB in general surgery and am currently pursuing MCH in surgical gastroenterology which I will be awarded in 2022. As I read in your blog, the specialist pathway will be the most ideal for me…if so how are my chances with that and if not then what other options would you suggest….thank you

    1. Getting comparability with the College of Surgeons is tough. There’s no other options available that would be realistic in your case.

      1. Thank you for your response…so what would you suggest if I’m keen to further work in Australia??…

  2. Hi Dr Llewellyn,

I am a board certified Paediatric surgeon , working as an associate consultant since 2.5 years after my qualification. My training was for 6 years in Paediatric surgery (DNB) and work experience of 2.5 years after that.
    1. Would I qualify to apply for specialist pathway to gain registeration with the above experience?
    2. should I have a job offer before I apply for specialist pathway?

    1. Hi, you would be able to apply for specialist recognition. The question is how good are your chances? There’s not a huge demand for extra paediatric surgeons here. So even if you made it through assessment you may find it difficult to get a supervised position.

    1. Hi Arvind
Unless you have some personal connections here I think it will be a struggle to gain a supervised post.
From your description, you should probably get through the college assessment process. But the issue is obtaining a position for the supervised component.

      1. Hello Mr. Anthony,
I’m a final year student of MBBS in India and I will be completing my internship by 2022 March/April. I will probably write Plab and do FY2 standalone ( will I be eligible for this, since I would have completed three months in surgery and medicine each). Will I then have higher chance of getting into Australia through Competent Authority Pathway? If so, will I have to work in a rural area for a year? I hope to get a surgery residency.
        Thank you in advance

        1. Hi Med I’m not an expert on the UK process sorry. If you can complete all steps of the PLAB yes you have a better chance of working in Australia via CA.

          1. Thank you for the reply! But do I have a chance of getting a surgery post in Australia after 1 yr of supervised training? I’ve heard that UK doctors have higher chances than the other IMGs, as mentioned in this page. What would you suggest? Stay in the UK or Australia?
