  1. Hi Anthony,
    Thanks for your valuable informations.
I have Masters IK Paediatrics (2 years programme) and another Diploma( 1 year programme) I have done PESCI and got for GP job as well and I’ll start my Limited Registration with AHPRA now. Do you think that I should try for AoN for Paediatrics or I should continue with AMC+PESCI( GP) job?
And another query is thay for AoN, specialist assessment is mandatory or not? Because I’m doubtful that 2 year+1 year Masters will not be suitable for specialist assessment.

    1. Hello, Firstly as I have noted in the post:
“Post Update: I continue to get regular queries about identifying Area of Need posts in Australia. Whilst the AoN system does still exist in Australia. These days it is very rare to come across an AoN designated position for any specialty. In the majority of cases, potential employers are requiring Specialists to go through the college assessment process, otherwise known as the Specialist Assessment Pathway, first before considering them for a position.”
In terms of whether you should attempt the Specialist Assessment. Pros: the RACP tends to be more liberal in its assessments than some other colleges. Cons: a 2 year Masters and a Diploma is not likely to be seen as rigorous enough.

  2. Hi
I am an overseas specialist, If I sit Pesci interview and pass the Pesci and work as Gp in Australia, is it possible to apply for Racp college assessment as well? After for example 2 months of amstarting of my Gp job?
Because its a time consuming process to be assessed by college! Or find a registrar position after a long time !
I mean If I gain AHPRA limited registration as General practitioner firstly, It makes my way easier or worse?

    1. PESCIs are only really used for General Practice. You have to have experience working in General Practice or be a qualified GP. GP is a specialty in its own right in Australia. You won’t be able to convert this to something else.

    1. Its not really used all that much for medical practitioners these days. I believe it may have been used for dentists in the past. But not sure.

  4. Hi Dr. L,
Done basic medical edu. from Kazakhstan, have done Residency in Cardiology, then was a 2 year program. Fellowship in interventional Cardiology 2 year program from Israel. Experience ~ 14 years.
should I bother myself to try for specialist pathway)
    Appreciate.

    1. I would advise against it. Mainly because it is incredibly difficult to get a supervised position even if you are judged to be comparable.

  9. Hi Dr Llewellyn. My name is Guido Valdes. I’m a 2nd year anesthesiology resident at a Buenos Aires Hospital in Argentina. The residency y accredited by the “Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA)”. After completing the 4year program and becoming a specialist in Argentina I intend to emigrate to Australia and become an Anesthesiolgy specialist there. Do you think I have gorunds to be eligible? Which pathway do you recomend me to follow?

    Thanks

    1. Hi Guido nice to meet you. If its a well-documented 4 year formal training program you probably stand a reasonable chance of gaining comparability status here. As always if you would like individual advice I suggest booking my initial call. Good Morning

      Thanks for your query
