  1. Hi, thanks for the informative article.

If an IMG obtains CESR in the UK does that allow them to apply through the competent authority pathway, or just the standard specialist pathway?

I’m already eligible for the standard specialist pathway (on the specialist register in South Africa), but I’m currently in the UK working my way through the (slow, painful) CESR process. I’m wondering if there is any advantage to completing it before moving to Australia?

    1. CESR only allows you to apply for the specialist pathway and generally will guarantee you a better outcome during assessment.

  2. Hi Anthony!

I have CESR in emergency medicine and worked for three years as a consultant in the U.K. What would be the best possible outcome from the specialist pathway assessment and are there enough opportunities for foreign-trained specialists in emergency medicine?
    Thank you.

  3. Hi Anthony
I am a medical graduate from Sri Lanka completed my MBBS 2009 and postgrauate degree MD in ophthalmology in 2017 .At the moment I am working in the UK as a specialty registrar with GMC registration through MTI pathway. This programme is for abroad exposure as a part of post MD training. Is there any possibility of finding a job in australia to become a specialist ?
Please note,I am still awaiting for specialist registry in Sri Lanka once I return back.Is it mandatory to go back and get in to specialist registry in Sri Lanka?

Alternatively, if I complete the CESR in UK and get the specialist registry in UK. Is it possible to get the specialist post?
    Which would you recommend?

    1. Either completing specialist training in Sri Lanka or obtaining the CESR would make you eligible to apply for the specialist pathway here.

  5. Hello! I am an IMG from pakistan with 1 year of internship, currently thinking to move towards Australia. I am trying to get knowledge about AMC liscencing and residency. Can you tell me what are the requirements to get residency in your desired field (surgery/breast surgery in my case) after getting full liscence..? And how difficult it is to get residency for IMGs? Thank you.

    1. Generally, if you have been approved as CESR in the UK for any specialty this means you are on the specialist register there. This is normally seen as equivalent to having completed the CCT route in Australia. Remember the colleges are judging you as to whether you have achieved the requirement for specialist recognition in another country, not the qualification you obtained.

  6. Hi Anthony,
I am a doctor from Japan and have a certificate in internal medicine. I contacted RACP if my certificate meets the requirements of the assessment, but I couldn’t get a clear answer. Do you think I could apply for the specialist pathway or I should go for the standard pathway?

    1. Hi they won’t be able to provide you with an answer because the answer is to go through their assessment process. If you would like to take a call with me we can go through it for you.

  7. I’m a medical graduate from srilanka and am in my first year of pre MD surgical training. Is there any possibility of my applying for a post graduate surgery training in Australia? If so what would be my options?

    1. You can apply for 2 years of top up training towards the end of your postgraduate training in Sri Lanka. Its call the Short Term Training in a Medical Specialty Pathway.

  9. Thank you so much for this comprehensive post, Anthony!
I was wondering if you could shed some light into my doubts.
I’m an Argentine trained doctor and before residency here I successfully passed all 3 USMLE steps. Does this mean I can apply for competent authority? Where can I find official information regarding this?

      1. Hello! I am an IMG from pakistan with 1 year of internship, currently thinking to move towards Australia. I am trying to get knowledge about AMC liscencing and residency. 1. Hi I am assuming you mean residency as in Registrar training (we don’t call it a residency here). Your question is very broad. Surgery is a tough field to get into for even local doctors. You will see there are posts about surgery on this blog.
